NUC Issues Directives on university resumption

The Nigerian university commission, NUC has on Tuesday, instructed vice-chancellors of universities in Nigeria to conclude resumption plan.
This instruction was made known in Abuja by NUC and acknowledged by its director (directorate of the executive secretary's office), Chris Maiyakja.
It stated that the new instruction is in accordance with the general reduction in Covid19 infection in the country, and directed the VCs to finalise plans in line with the covid19 guildlines on safe reopening of schools.
In his statement was, “Following the recent press briefing by the Presidential Task Force Team on COVID – 19, to the effect that significant decline in the reproduction number (R-value) for COVID – 19 has been recorded in the country, the Federal Ministry of Education has accepted the request of the National Universities Commission for Universities to firm up arrangement towards the immediate resumption of academic activities.
“Universities should expect inspection visits from staffs of the commission and the Ministry of Education for on-the-spot inspections of physical facilities such as the lecture theatres, accommodation, healthcare facilities.
Meanwhile, this online news platform recalls that The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), stated that until the Federal Government honours the agreement it made with the union, it members will not resume classes.
Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, the national president of ASUU, made this public at a town hall meeting held at the university of illorin last week.
He added that if the government refuses to negotiate the 2009 agreement acknowledged by both parties, the union will reveal it's next agenda.
